canada day
It’s 8:30 am on July first. I have my first cup of coffee and my website has its first piece of spam posting.
The thing I’m proudest of in Canada today is that we’re legalizing gay marriage. I think it’s great. I think if you’re against gay marriage, don’t marry a gay person and you should be fine. And the subtle thing is, by taking some of the pressure against difference off you allow people who have been fighting for the right to be different a little space to actually look at themselves in more complex, less under-pressure ways. The freedom to love and have equal rights may initially produce a lot of gay marriages, and many of those may not last (just like many straight ones) and the process of figuring out who we are and what we value beyond our mistakes will be made a little easier by not having to get stuck at fighting for basic rights. And in this way people will come naturally- without being forced- towards more complete selves and then happy, contributing functionning families, that just might look a little different from the ones we might have gotten used to seeing around us.
that’s my belief. big big idealist and fan of the human rights. yep. HAPPY CANADA DAY!
Oh, and congrats to me, my name’s been passed on to the interview stage for assistant editor of the canadian journal of communications. so that’s nice!
